The Field Operations Bureau is the most visible part of the Maryland State Police since it includes all Troopers who regularly interact with the public. Within the Bureau are five commands: the Northern Command and Southern Command which together encompass the 22 barracks; the Aviation Command; the Special Operations Command; and the Transportation Safety Command.
The Northern Command is divided into the Central, Northern, and Western troops and the Southern Command is divided into the Eastern, Southern, and Washington Metro troops. Troopers assigned to each of the 22 Barracks patrol every county in Maryland, enforcing laws and answering calls for assistance. Unlike many state police agencies that are strictly highway patrol, the Maryland State Police is a full-service law enforcement agency. In many counties in Maryland we are the primary police agency, in other counties we work side-by-side with members of the county police and sheriff departments and in the "metropolitan" areas of the state we focus mainly on the interstates.
In addition to the traditional law enforcement services, each Barrack also provides additional services to assist the public. These services include fingerprinting, salvage inspections and car seat safety checks. For a full listing of services, as well as the days and times they are offered, please select a Barrack. The Field Operations Bureau also includes the Aviation Command, the Special Operations Command and the Transportation Safety Command. Our world-renowned Aviation Command provides round-the-clock medevac, airborne law enforcement, and search and rescue services. The Special Operations Command assists the troopers on the road with specialized units such as the K-9 Unit, Motorcycle Unit, Underwater Recovery Team, Hostage Recovery Team, and the Special Tactial Assault Team Element or S.T.A.T.E. Team (our SWAT team). Supporting the S.T.A.T.E. Team is the Tactical Medical Unit. The largest units within the Transportation Safety Command are the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division which provides focused enforcement of commercial vehicle laws, and the Automotive Safety Enforcement Division which maintains the integrity of all vehicle inspection stations in Maryland.
